Renaming your WordPress login url from the default “wp-login.php” to another url like “/login” beneficial for a few reasons:
- Using a readable url is easier to remember for your users
- Hackers try to target the default url path of “/wp-login.php”. Moving it makes it slightly harder for bots to find.
There is more major caveat though. Make sure you don’t forget your new login url. If you get locked out of your WordPress dashboard and try to navigate to the default “/wp-admin” url to log in, you’ll get a 404 and be locked out.
How to change your login url
My recommended way of changing your WordPress login url is to use a plugin. I recommended using Custom Login URL. This plugin is up to date with the latest version of WordPress and maintained by the author. Not only does Custom Login URL let your change the urls for your login screen along with all the other screens related to creating an account, like registration, resetting a password and logging out. It’s pretty easy to use and setup. After you activate the plugin, all you need to do is go to Settings -> Permalinks and configure your URLs.
